Online IB Chemistry Lessons
Personalised online Chemistry lessons let a student spend time exactly where they need it — slowing down on a concept that hasn't clicked yet, or moving quickly through material that's already solid, rather than following a fixed classroom pace built for the whole group.
IB Chemistry Concept Building
IB Chemistry rewards students who can apply a principle to an unfamiliar situation, not just recall it. Lessons focus on understanding concepts properly, applying them to calculations and data-based questions, and building that understanding through structured practice — with exam technique built in throughout rather than left to the final weeks.
The IB Chemistry Syllabus: Structure and Reactivity
The current IB Chemistry course — first taught from September 2023, first examined in May 2025 — is built around two overarching themes rather than the old numbered “Topics 1 to 21” structure. Every part of the course sits under one of six strands:
Structure 1
Models of the particulate nature of matter
Structure 2
Models of bonding and structure
Structure 3
Classification of matter
Reactivity 1
What drives chemical reactions?
Reactivity 2
How much, how fast and how far?
Reactivity 3
What are the mechanisms of chemical change?
Standard Level and Higher Level students follow the same six strands — HL goes further into each one rather than covering separate additional topics, and the old optional-topic units no longer exist on this syllabus.
IB Chemistry Exam Pattern
External assessment is split into Paper 1 and Paper 2. Paper 1 itself has two parts — 1A (multiple-choice) and 1B (data-based and experimental-work questions) — while Paper 2 is short-answer and extended-response. Alongside this, every student completes an Internal Assessment, now called the scientific investigation.
Standard Level (SL)
- Paper 1 (1A + 1B) — 1 hour 30 minutes
- Paper 2 — 1 hour 30 minutes
- External assessment — 80% of the final grade
- Scientific investigation (IA) — 20% of the final grade
Higher Level (HL)
- Paper 1 (1A + 1B) — 2 hours
- Paper 2 — 2 hours 30 minutes
- External assessment — 80% of the final grade
- Scientific investigation (IA) — 20% of the final grade
The full subject guide is published by the IB and accessed by schools through the password-protected Programme Resource Centre, so it isn’t a freely public document — the IB Diploma Programme sciences page is the right place to start for the official overview.
Topic-Wise Practice
Practice is organised by topic rather than as a yearly past-paper archive. Explore IB Chemistry topic resources to see what's available so far.
Worksheets and MCQs
Structured worksheets build a concept up step by step; multiple-choice questions offer a quick way to check understanding and spot gaps between lessons. Both are being organised topic by topic for IB Chemistry.
Topical Question Practice
Topical theory questions give exam-style practice on one topic at a time. Browse IB Chemistry topics for what's published so far.
Marking Schemes
Where available, mark schemes let a student check their own answer against what a full-mark response actually needs to include — useful for understanding exactly how IB Chemistry answers are assessed, not just whether the final answer was right.
